Dave Winer posits, "or maybe Second Life will be the new operating system for this century." I respect a lot of what Dave Winer's done; he's done more in the world of software than I can ever dream of doing, and he's been doing it probably longer than I've been breathing. However, as much as he talks about "unconferences" and open protocols, it's rather obvious he's only seen SL through the eyes of a user and not the eyes of a developer.
Maybe he knows something I don't, or seen a side of SL I have not seen, but there's no way that SL is the OS for the 21st century. That would require Linden Lab to realize SL is an actual software tool and not some happy, fuzzy Wora'uld. Seriously, I'd be more inclined to trust that a complete Windows Vista rewrite would be useful sooner than SL will ever be.
Plus, with the Microsoft Gadgets, all the work being done to DirectX 10, .NET only getting easier and more integrated into the world, and Microsoft's (seeming) commitment behind XBox Live (via the 360), I'd be inclined to open up my old, almost healed XBox wounds and watch for Microsoft showing people how to roll their own SL sooner than I'd expect SL to take over.
EDIT: Start the laughter now, as Scoble says, "I think he [and by he, he means me] hasn't seen inside of Second Life yet or seen just what a developer can do with it." Uh, yeah. I've seen the inside of SL and what developers can do with it. Two words, Scoble: Garry's Mod. |

scoble doesn't understand os.
After reading Uncov recently, and having had my own "brush" with fame, I get the impression Scoble doesn't underatsnd a lot.
